album art for splattershot. it’s my lil splatoon guy

boy this was a whirlwind. i had some idea to do an oops-all-samples kinda project starting with the drum kits in the korg synth package on the switch. i wanted to do some glitchy kind of stuff, too - i’ve been inspired by breakmaster cylinder’s way of making music sound glitchy because it’s something i’d never have thought to try. the samples on the korg are all really solid. the dr. dre one cracks me up, it’s in a couple of my tracks.

at first i wanted to do a bunch of very different tracks, but these two ideas were solid and i had the thought to swap out all of the samples. this was a good one. rapid iteration meant eight very quick tracks. i hand-picked only a tiny few changes, most of them were pseudo-random and i left them alone. the product is better for it.

i wanted to do a third set of tracks using samples from splatoon, fire emblem warriors three hopes, guild wars, and phantasy star online. i recorded samples from all four of these games. in the end this foray became the bonus 9th track with the splatoon in the left ear and fire emblem in the right ear - once again, it’s a sample-for-sample swap of the same composition. i think it’s a good stopping point for this quick project.

the whole thing took me only 48 hours or less from start to finish, and even fewer than that of actual labor on the project itself - maybe two hours composing the first two tracks, two hours sample swapping, and two to four hours recording samples from splatoon & fire emblem, mixing everything, and mastering. i’m really happy with this little side project, and i’m glad i pushed myself to try something entirely new to me.
